Fortune Star Chinese Restaurant

Image
439 Prince Street Sydney, NS Our October outing took us to the Fortune Star, a Chinese restaurant located between Big Ben's and the old video store that is up for sale, across the street from the Esso station and, as luck would have it, also across from the Chinese restaurant that we went to in April of 2014. At one point in its life, this building looks like it had been the home of a steelworker, who perhaps would have walked to work just over the hill. As Sydney grew and the commercial area expanded, this home became part of the business district. It was added to and renovated until it became the location of at least two Chinese restaurants. The entrance is actually from the side of the building as shown above.  The inside of the restaurant is similar to other Chinese restaurants - very colourful: The restaurant runs from the front of the building to the back, with just a few rows of seating at either booths or tables. Not much attention has been paid to

Miners' Village Restaurant

Image
42 Birkley Street Glace Bay This month, a fair number of the UAG headed to the Miners' Village Restaurant in Glace Bay. This seasonal restaurant has been in business for many years, with a variety of owners and managers. None of us had been there in a few years, so needless to say, we were excited about our visit. The restaurant is located on the grounds of the museum, snuggled in amidst historical buildings. There is a large parking lot at the foot of this sidewalk where I stood to take this picture. And to the left of this image is the Atlantic ocean. We arrived on a lovely fall evening as you can see below. That's the Miners' Museum in the distance. The restaurant is in the green building. There is a plaque that you can stop to read as you enter the restaurant and there's not a word of lie on it: Home-style cooking? Yes!  Delicious? Yes! Varied? Yes! When we entered the restaurant, it was as if we had walked into a twentieth-century front room p

Iona Highland Heights Inn

In Iona Next to the Highland Village Museum This month's outing took us once again to a hotel outside of Sydney, although this time ten of us jumped in our cars and headed across the Washabuckt line into Victoria County. Considering it was the most perfect Cape Breton summer evening ever, the drive along the Bras d'Or lakes was just breathtaking.  In no time at all, we had crossed the bridge to Iona and were heading up the hill to the Inn. But we weren't the only ones out and about on a glorious evening! The Iona Legion was packed - it was Friday night and that could only mean people were lining up for the corned beef dinners. When we arrived at the Inn, we each took a moment to enjoy the view. The dining room of the Inn is set up with a large fireplace at one end (no need for a fire thankfully) and a small stage at the other end. A bar runs along one wall and along the other...well, a row of large windows with a view of the Strait that is truly amazing. I

The Clansmen Motel

Image
9 Baird Street North Sydney, NS I know that you, our dear readers, have been visiting our blog for a few years now, so I think that we have reached that point at which we can confide in you. Let's put our feet up, sip our tea, and chat. I have to tell you that the Clansmen Motel was not our first choice. Our first choice was ruled out when we visited their website and saw their prices. Quelle surprise! Yes, we are the Up for Anything Group but we're getting wiser with age and our instincts told us to keep looking. And that search led us to the website of the Clansmen Motel - not too far from our first choice, but with a nicely varied menu and prices that would allow us to put gas in the car to drive home. None of us had ever been there and what with it being a Friday, we jumped into our cars and headed to North Sydney. When we arrived, we noticed how lovely the grounds were and who could resist that sign? We entered the motel, passed this delightful lunch room:
