Daniel's Restaurant & Bar

Image
456 Charlotte Street Sydney, NS You don't have to put any money in the meter after 5:00 pm The UAG has compiled a list of restaurants that we haven't visited yet and this one, Daniel's, was the second on the list. The first restaurant on the list was closed so the staff could enjoy a vacation - we will try and visit that one before too long as we hear their Ginger Beef is out of this world. So what did the group think of Daniel's?  Eight members attended this month's outing so there were lots of opinions. The first thing that you have to know about Daniel's is that it is owned and operated by the same people who own and operate The Bonnie Prince. So that tells you immediately that the service is going to be professional and that the food is going to be good. And it was! Both the waitress and the bartender handled every request efficiently and quickly, always with a smile. And the food? Green Drinks The first people to arrive at the table...

TALO Cafébar

Image
195 Commerical Street Glace Bay, NS Imagine walking in to town through the Park and down to the harbour. It's a warm, sunny day, with a fresh ocean breeze. You have stopped at the florists by the bridge and you are carrying a lovely array of flowers for tonight's dinner table. You are on your way up the street to your favourite used bookstore, hoping to find a well-loved murder mystery. As you walk, you notice the TALO Caf é bar sign. You decide to stop in to pick up a fresh-baked dessert for tonight, maybe a pie...yummy choices. While you are standing in front of the baked goods, friends call your name and invite you to join them for a cold glass of wine and a light lunch. Sound like one of Debbie Macomber's openings? No, it's not fiction, dear readers; it's all possible in downtown Glace Bay. A large group of us met at the TALO Caf é bar for this month's outing, our first outing to the town of Glace Bay. This is a new restaurant located in a reno...

Hearthstone Inn

Image
560 King's Road Sydney, NS Our first outing of the year was to the Hearthstone Inn, or as most of us know it, the old Quality Inn on King's Road.  This motel was built many years ago when King's Road was two lanes and when the old Holiday Inn and the Isle Royale Motel were the only competitors in the area.  In the last number of years, however, the Holiday Inn has changed names and owners, the Isle Royale died a slow and painful death, and fierce competition opened up over the hill. But this building has good bones and high hopes.  We were curious and anxious for our old friend.  How did our evening go? The restaurant is still in the same place as it was, as is the see-through stone fireplace. The pictures on their website do not lie - the dining room is comfortable and cozy, with a nice view of King's Road.  Even though it was a Friday night at supper time, there were very few people in the restaurant and as it turned out, people at our table knew p...

Steel City Sports Bar

Image
252 Townsend Street, Sydney Really, everyone knows where it is. For our last outing of the year, we decided to go to Steel City, which has been in business since like forever. Our readers will know that we do not hesitate to dine in bars - we are an adventuresome bunch. And as some of us in the bunch are a bit older, some of us have dined in different bars over the years.  So we can tell you with a wealth of experience behind us that the Steel City is a well-designed drinking establishment. As you can see in the photo, it is on one level; there isn't even a step up when you walk in. There is no falling down the stairs to the bathroom or yes, as I have, fallen up the stairs to the bathroom. In fact, there are no stairs to the bathroom. You can have a few and retain your dignity at Steel City. There is parking on two sides, many doors in case you have to leave quickly, a dance floor and a small stage for local bands.  A large group of us met up on the Thursday eve...
