Trio

TRIO

380 Esplanade
Sydney

This is a lovely restaurant, located on the first floor of the Cambridge Suites.  The restaurant is on the side of the hotel, overlooking the harbour. Although it was my first time there, several of the others had already dined at Trio and were, quite frankly, anxious to return.  There were a few new members at the table, so we were able to select quite a few items from the menu.

Salads and Appetizers:

There were two appetizers ordered:

1.  You can see the Half Caesar Salad to the left, which got excellent reviews.

2. The second appetizer disappeared so fast that we didn't get a photo.  There should be a photo here of the Kettle Chips, salt & vinegar, with a wonderful dipping sauce. Heaven, can you say Heaven?

Dinners:

This is the half-sized Fish 'n Chips that I ordered and I have to tell you that my mouth is watering just telling you about it.  So Good! And the portion size (keep in mind this was a half order) was large enough that I took some home.  And yes, it reheated beautifully.

This is the Corned Beef and Cabbage - and it does taste as good as it looks. The concern of the person who placed this order was would it be dry? You know how horrible it is to look forward to a nice Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner and then well, it's dry and chewy.  All accounts are that this meal was a melt-in-your-mouth Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner. And not too salty either!

This is the Mushroom Fettuccine and again, the person who ordered this dinner really enjoyed it.  She is also a fan of Trio and has been at the restaurant a few times. You can see that this is also a good-sized servicing, which was very filling but left room for dessert.

Have you noticed the tea pots? Several of us ordered tea with our meals (this is Cape Breton after all) and I will mention here that these were Good Tea Pots.  What's a Good Tea Pot?  One that doesn't leak/drip/otherwise cause a mess when you pour a cup of tea. You can judge a restaurant by the quality of its tea pots.

Two of the ladies at the table ordered the Pan-Fried Haddock - this is the full-sized meal as they had already decided that they weren't having dessert.  It is also available in a half-sized serving. Rumour has it that Trio is known for its Pan-Fried Haddock, so perhaps they knew this before they ordered!  And they were not disappointed.

Yes, doesn't this look wonderful?  This is the Steak Frites.  I don't think you need a description here..the meal tasted just like it looks.  Perfection.  I also have to tell you about Trio's fries, as several of us ordered them.  They are large, crisp, home fries with tons of flavour. And you receive just the right amount of fries to go with the meal. You know how some restaurants pile on the fries to hide the sadness of the serving? Well, Trio does not do that.  There is no sadness here.

Here is a photo of the Trio Shepherd's Pie, which was made with Guinness Lamb Stew and topped with cheese.  Can't you just imagine the flavour of this dish?  This person also took some of her absolutely fabulous serving of shepherd's pie home for re-heating.  We are not shy about asking to take delicious food home with us.

Desserts:
Oh my heavens, we did enjoy our desserts!

Here is a photos of the Apple Crisp, which by all accounts, was cooked just like Mah's.

Oh yes, there is a dessert in the white container that you can see in the photo - it was ordered as a Take-Away.  And what is it?

A Chocolate Truffle Cake, another item for which Trio is well known.

And if you look very closely at the photo above, you'll see there are actually 2 containers for 2 lucky people who ate Chocolate Truffle Cake at home that night.

And this heavenly dish is the New York Lemon Cheesecake, which was ordered by two of the ladies at the table.  Isn't it fancy?  I'm told that it tasted just right, not too lemony, which is important when you are finishing up a lovely meal.

I was quite clever and ordered my Maple Creme Brulee first, right off the bat, before ordering anything else...because the waiter said that there were only 2 servings left.

Well, what a sweet treat! Don't you just love it when your spoon first breaks through the crisp top? And yes, that's maple syrup on the side.

Note:

I suggest that you make reservations if you plan to visit Trio, as there was quite a line-up when we were leaving. Having said that, at no time did we feel rushed to leave and we were there for a little over 2 hours! Did I mention that the service was excellent as well?  Each dish was removed just when it should have been removed by a waiter who never, ever, lost his patience with a group of fun-loving women.

The setting was comfortable, the staff professional, the food delicious, the company excellent. I think I've just become a Trio fan too!
