Wong's Family Restaurant

Wong's on the main street in Baddeck
Looking outside to the street and across to the Telegraph House
This month, two carloads of UAG members travelled up the road to the lovely town of Baddeck, about a 40-minute drive from Sydney. It was a beautiful evening - perfect for crossing the Seal Island Bridge and heading up and over the mountain. And what fun! We laughed all the way to Baddeck.

Our first impression was one of surprise - Wong's is quite large inside with two dining areas. Our waitress was great; she was very professional and handled all of our requests, including turning a Black Russian into a White Russian. Yes, we all had cocktails!

You are looking at L to R:

a Deep Blue Sea Cocktail, a Bermuda Rose, a Pinot Grigio, a White Russian, a Caesar, and a Planter's Punch.

They were wonderful (just a bit strong) and as a result, we didn't mind at all that our food took some time to travel from the kitchen.

We ordered two appetizers from the menu:
A huge bowl of excellent Wonton soup
Crispy & tasty Fried Wontons with a spicy (allspice?) sauce
We really enjoyed the appetizers! Our group then ordered a variety of dishes:

a large portion of Spicy Noodles (just a tad spicer than expected).

the Cantonese Chow Mein - very tasty.

the Subgum Wontons. This dish came with a bowl of plain white rice and a half dozen wontons with red sauce.

Both members who ordered this dish said the same thing - it had very little flavour.

But there was lots of it.

a No. 2 Combination Plate with chicken fried rice, an egg roll, honey/garlic spareribs, and sweet & sour chicken balls.

Yes, it was delicious.

a No. 2 Combination Plate, again with chicken fried rice, an egg roll, and sweet & sour chicken balls, but this time with chicken chop suey.

And again, it was delicious!

I have to say that this was not the best Chinese food that the UAG has had over the years of our travels, but we enjoyed our meals.

All of us took our leftovers home for lunch the next day.

Now comes the second surprise...we were eating at a Chinese restaurant that didn't have any fortune cookies! So the members took a vote and decided to head next door for our tea and dessert.

Now take a close look - can you see the young girl in the doorway? Well, she's actually locking the door. The Highlander closes at 6:00 pm on a Friday night (we were gobsmacked) and it was exactly 6:00 pm. What to do? Well, we are nothing if not adventuresome! And desperately in need of a cup of tea.
She wanted to be in the picture.
Yes, we went to the Cedar House - where the sign said that they closed at 8:00 pm, but really, they just mean that they close the door at 8:00 pm. If you can get in the door (and we did), you can Party Hearty until they throw you out. And did we have tea? You bet we did!

You all know how much we love the Cedar House. Because we had been there before, we weren't even going to take pictures. But seeing as how we were having so much fun, here you are.

The tea was fabulous.

There is something about having a hot cup of tea in a packed restaurant with a locked front door that just blows your socks off.

It's like we were invited to a secret party.

So did we order desserts? You bet we did!
Dark chocolate cake with boiled icing

Lemon Meringue Pie

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie (not heated by request) with Ice Cream

Strawberry Shortcake on a Homemade Tea Biscuit
As you can imagine, this was quite a late night for us. But luckily, it was one of those long summer evenings that you wait all year for. And we laughed all the way home - we did. This was a fun evening that turned out exactly right.
