Italian Buffet at the Polish Hall, Whitney Pier

Image
We're Back at the Polish Hall! Last year's UAG outing to the Polish Hall in Whitney Pier for the St. Michael's Parish Italian supper was such a success that we went back again this year.  However, the UAG has grown since last year - believe it or not -there were 16 of us and we took up two full tables. The buffet was opened to the sold-out crowd after a lovely blessing by the same MC who hosted the event last year. And the buffet? Well, it was also exactly the same as last year - the food was fabulous and there was plenty of it.  We did discover this year that the dish with the "weiners in dark sauce" was, in fact, sausages in a honey/garlic sauce. Heavenly! UAG members made comments such as "Loved the variety!", "Can't wait until next year!", "Absolutely amazing!", "Great experience!" and "I need a post feeding frenzy nap." There was lots of food for everyone again this year and people were encouraged ...

Port Morien Legion

Image
Port Morien Legion in beautiful Downtown Port Morien Just as we promised last spring, the UAG headed back to the Port Morien Legion for their spring Dinner Theatre.  There was a large group of us and luckily, we had purchased our tickets well in advance.  So how was it this year? We entered the Legion and were met by the same big smiles and excitement that we experienced last year.  Our meal was served almost as we sat down, and again, it was a fabulous steaming hot roast beef dinner with large crusty dinner rolls.  Dessert was different this year; we enjoyed a rhubarb and apple crumble with whipped cream.  The bar was open and some of us sampled the refreshments. With hardly time to finish our cups of tea (excellent tea, by the way), the curtains went up on Michael Parker's "Who's in Bed with the Butler?"  Michael Parker writes slapstick comedy, with lots of people coming and going out of doors, false identities, and some fairly adult humour. ...

A Bite of Asia

Image
76 Dorchester Street, Sydney (Old Chandlers Bar) Due to a death in the family, this blog entry will be incredibly brief.  On April 1st, ten members met at the newest restaurant in Sydney, A Bite of Asia, and had an awesome time. The food was great - we all enjoyed our choice of dinners, from the beginnings: Best Wonton Soup She'd Ever Had (actual quote) Tom Yum Soup (just a bit spicy) Spring rolls (crispy and fresh) to the middles: including the Pad Thai dishes: to the dessert: And throughout our meal, our tea service was replenished as required. Pretty, isn't it? Wonderful new flavours, great atmosphere and attentive staff - we will all be stopping in again.

Rack and Roll

Image
3345 Plummer Avenue New Waterford Anyone who is following our Blog knows that this group of diners will go anywhere on a Friday night and we have been to several pubs through our years together. This month, we headed to downtown New Waterford to try the Rack and Roll on the main drag. People were surprised - yes, the Rack and Roll can be quite the hot spot late at night, but at the supper hour, it's just plain fun. This pub is surprisingly spacious; the bar, the kitchen, the washrooms and the Chase the Ace ticket table are all situated towards the back of the building. The front two thirds of the building is open floor space filled with wooden tables and chairs, a large stage and one billiard table (there used to be more) .  The result is that you have a clear view of the band and of everyone else in the room. It was like being at a wedding reception where it wasn't so bad that you didn't know anyone; you just knew that you'd all be friends by the end of the ev...

The Casino Again

Image
This turned out to be a lovely still evening, just a day before a massive snow storm hit Cape Breton and left many of us without power for more than 2 days. Talk about the calm before the storm! A large group of us met at the Casino for their Buffet Special. We didn't take any pictures this time as the Casino was packed. But please do see our November 2013 posting for comments and photos. The dinner selections of the Buffet were served at the back of the restaurant area, while the dessert table was set up along the wall opposite the booths. Once you had your plate in hand, the first offerings were rolls, a couple of cold salads, including potato salad, and coleslaw. These selections were followed by hot mashed potatoes, mashed carrots, a peach chutney, gravy, a minced beef dish, and roast pork loin. Our members commented on how yummy everything was! While we were eating, our waitress, the incredible Georgina, kept our mugs filled with steeped tea or coffee. There was no end to...

Fortune Star Chinese Restaurant

Image
439 Prince Street Sydney, NS Our October outing took us to the Fortune Star, a Chinese restaurant located between Big Ben's and the old video store that is up for sale, across the street from the Esso station and, as luck would have it, also across from the Chinese restaurant that we went to in April of 2014. At one point in its life, this building looks like it had been the home of a steelworker, who perhaps would have walked to work just over the hill. As Sydney grew and the commercial area expanded, this home became part of the business district. It was added to and renovated until it became the location of at least two Chinese restaurants. The entrance is actually from the side of the building as shown above.  The inside of the restaurant is similar to other Chinese restaurants - very colourful: The restaurant runs from the front of the building to the back, with just a few rows of seating at either booths or tables. Not much attention has been paid to ...

Miners' Village Restaurant

Image
42 Birkley Street Glace Bay This month, a fair number of the UAG headed to the Miners' Village Restaurant in Glace Bay. This seasonal restaurant has been in business for many years, with a variety of owners and managers. None of us had been there in a few years, so needless to say, we were excited about our visit. The restaurant is located on the grounds of the museum, snuggled in amidst historical buildings. There is a large parking lot at the foot of this sidewalk where I stood to take this picture. And to the left of this image is the Atlantic ocean. We arrived on a lovely fall evening as you can see below. That's the Miners' Museum in the distance. The restaurant is in the green building. There is a plaque that you can stop to read as you enter the restaurant and there's not a word of lie on it: Home-style cooking? Yes!  Delicious? Yes! Varied? Yes! When we entered the restaurant, it was as if we had walked into a twentieth-century front room p...
