This month, what with the success of our last adventure, we decided to again visit a community event for dinner. As part of the Whitney Pier annual celebration, Pierscape, the Italian Society offers an Italian buffet; this was their 18th year and because the buffet is always so good, tickets sell out very quickly. We got our tickets three weeks in advance - nine of us planned to attend the dinner and then go up the hill to the high school to view the Pierscape art show and sale.
What a dinner! The Italian buffet was set up on a long table that ran the full length of the hall and we all sat at tables on either side. The bar was open and tickets were sold on a painting that some lucky person was going to win that evening. And the buffet? Well, we started at one end and promised ourselves we would only take a little bit from each platter. But by the time we each got to the end of the buffet, our plates were piled high! It was fantastic. While we were eating, ladies were refilling serving platters with hot and cold selections; there was no end to the food. Everything was delicious, from the first bowl of potato salad, through the meatballs, lasagna, breaded chicken wings, wieners in a dark sauce, the various salads, to the cold platters. Did I mention that each table also had two baskets of rolls? A separate table held the tea, coffee and individual slices of white cake. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, one of the ladies brought homemade eclairs to each table. Bursting! We were bursting when we walked out. What a dinner!
From the hall, we all travelled up the hill to the high school to view the Pierscape art show and sale. Large quilts hung on the gym walls, while rows of easels held paintings, photographs and needlework pieces. There were also displays of pottery and woodwork. The quality of the artwork was varied, from beginner to professional. I have to tell you that I walked around one easel and came face to face with a watercolour that stopped me in my tracks. I couldn't breathe. For that moment, I felt love at first sight - I could picture sharing my home with that watercolour and being completely happy forever. That moment of suspension is the same whether it's in a gym in Whitney Pier or an art gallery in New York city - what an amazing feeling!
Isn't it wonderful that we can attend a delicious Italian buffet at a Polish Hall and then within a few moments, view breathtaking artwork?
Tell me that we aren't blessed to be living in Cape Breton!
